Arts & Culture Stories
The heart of Cedar Rapids Arts and Cultural corridor was affected by the floods of 2008. Our African American Historical Center, the National Czech and Slovak Museum (pictured), our Public Library (pictured) and our community performance venues - the historic Paramount Theater and Theatre Cedar Rapids (pictured) all experienced devastating losses. The contacts below can provide you with a wealth of information regarding the progress - and challenges of our valuable cultural organizations.
Running Out of Time
Although the arts and cultural community are aware of the priorities to deal with the housing and small business issues, their patience is not unlimited. The total flood-related losses are nearly $30 million and funds received to date from multiple sources (insurance, grants, donations, Jumpstart and some FEMA funds) are $3,650,000.
Audience Erosion
While the performing arts groups are continuing their seasons, most of the temporary locations are less than ideal – fewer seats, inconvenient parking, and lack of amenities, plus inadequate stage space –will cause erosion of the audience. The three museums are studying new locations without knowing when decisions will be made about flood mitigation. It is a challenging time, a time when the arts and culture groups are needed more than ever. These organizations are the anchors of the community and essential to healing this community.
